Background and Theme
The Short Story "Neighbours" was written by Tim Winton. He was born in 1960. He is an Australian author. The "Neighbor" is taken from the Migrants of Australia. Neighbor is a story of a newly married couple living in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual neighborhood. It shows that cultural and linguistic barriers cannot stop people from being loving and compassionate. It also shows the importance of neighbors and neighborhood in the life of a person Human relationships are the greatest things in the world.
Summary
The main protagonist of the story is a newly married couple. At the beginning of the story, the newly married young couple are migrants to a city in Australia. Their new house was small but had high ceilings and paned windows. It makes it feel like a cottage. On the left of the young couple's house, there lived a Macedonian family and a widower from Poland on the right side of the young couple's house. From the room, the young man can see the rooftops, used car yards, and the Moreton Bay figs in the park.
The young couple recognized their neighbors as uncivilized and annoying people at the beginning of their arrival from various odd activities that they witnessed. People in their surroundings used to scream, quarrel and make unnecessary noise. They also lack proper sanitation. They used to complain to them about their dog. They used to interfere in their household activities. All these things made a negative impression on their neighborhood at the beginning of their arrival.
But, the neighborhood responded very well when they learn about the women's pregnancy. They responded with grace happiness and politeness. It took months to know the neighbor. In the autumn, when the young couple was planting onions, cabbages, garlic, etc. the neighbor come there to offer advice about spacing, hilling, and mulching. big woman with black eyes gave her a bag of garlic to plant. after some time, the young man, and women tried to build the henhouse. But it fell down. At the same time, the old Polish widower helped to build a hen house. The interesting thing is that the young couple did not understand the widower's language.
When winter arrived, the young man worked on the thesis of the development of the tweenthy century. He used to cook dinner and listen to the story of his wife about his lack of skill in the hospital. After some time, the wife becomes pregnant. But they hadn't planned on a pregnancy. The young women took leave for maternity. After some time, they realized that the whole neighborhood knew of the pregnancy. Some of them gave her small presents of chocolate. Italian women began to offer names. Greek women touched the belly and said it was a boy. The neighbor knitted the baby a suit. The neighbors took more care of them. Now the couple comes to realize the importance of neighbors.
After some time, the young woman gave birth to a baby. When the baby began to cry because of the loss of nipple the young man come to the back door of the Macedonian side to take help. Then, the young man relaxed the twentieth-century novel half meaning without dealing with reality. It means there is a gap between bookish knowledge and real life.
In this way. the story ended. The writer wants to show the cooperation and familiar behavior of neighbors even though they are different in language, culture, nationality, etc. The helpful behavior of the neighbor is shown. The newly married couple felt uncomfortable at first and slowly they have a habit of them and came to know the love and affection of their neighbor towards them. They realized that there is lots of connection of love, help, and memories even though they don't know about each other's culture.
